Build Self Esteem in Your Child

Two Sets of Three
by John Wooden

The first set is about honesty:

Never lie.
Never cheat.
Never steal.

The second set is about dealing with adversity:

Don't whine.
Don't complain.
Don't make excuses.

Some people today may think these are naive or kind of corny. But think a moment about what they mean and who you become if you abide by them. That isn't naive.

Suntwisters

The Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center's (BSAC) Suntwister Gymnastics program is one of the best gymnastics programs in Central Florida. BSAC offers progressive lessons for children ages three and up, with approximately 35 classes taught each week. BSAC's gym is equipped for men's and women's gymnastics and cheerleader tumbiling.

The Suntwister team includes Junior Olympic age group teams that compete in USA Gymnastics (USGA) and Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) sanctioned events throughout the country. Every young gymnast begins training in a progressive gymnastics class, which teaches them the basic fundamentals of gymnastics. Once the child has successfully completed these classes they are invited to start training in various team training programs. Throughout these programs they begin building confidence, strength and skills that will enable them to compete in either USAG competitions or AAU competitions.

Similar to training procedures in Russia, Romania, and China our coaches spot a child's talent at a young age. Coaches and trainers look for ability such as flexibility, strength and coordination. These children are put into classes that focus on the child's ability. This facilitates the child to progress quickly and obtain the skills and physical ability required to reach the highest level of gymnastics.

The gymnastics program operates year round and is directed by Bruce Ayres. Ayres has been with the Suntiwsters since 1990 and heads a staff of 10 coaches and instructors. Prior to joining BSAC Ayres was the founder and director of Florida Suncoast Gymnastics from 1983-1991. He has coached 11 National Medallists, one national All Around Champion and several recipients of gymnastics college scholarships.

Team Structure

Hot Shots for Tots
This class is for children between the ages of four and six who show talent in the areas of strength and flexibility and who are also mature enough to handle longer practices. This program builds on skills that will permit these young gymnasts to start testing in the Top's Program at the age of seven.

Pre-Team
These children are taken from our level 2 and 3 progressive classes and range in age from eight and older. These children are chosen for their work ethic, their flexibility and strength and skill level. These gymnasts also show their potential and desire to be a competitive gymnast. These gymnasts will continue to learn skills that will allow them to compete in AAU level 3 and 4 competitions.

All-Star Suntwisters
Members of this team range in age from six to eight and are usually moved up from our Super Tots and Level 1 progressive classes. Their ability to learn skills at a faster pace than other children their age allows them to become an All-Star Suntwister.

Junior Suntwisters
This class will be offered in January of 2005 to children who are ready to move up from the All-Star team. These gymnasts have acquired the skills needed to start learning USAG compulsory routines. The Junior Suntwisters Team, includes one hour of dance in the training schedule.

Suntwisters Team
The Suntwister teams are coached by Kelly Drasher and Mircea "Chico" Petre. Once your child is ready to start competing, they will officially become part of the Suntwisters team. As a Suntwister your child will not only be practicing throughout the season, but will enjoy many competitions, sleepovers, pool parties and other exciting activities that take place throughout the year. Your child will create friendships and memories that will last a lifetime.

Team schedules are available upon request.

Cheer-Tumbling
This exciting class is available to male and female middle and high school cheerleaders looking to improve their tumbling skills. Students will learn how to do a variety of tumbling passes ranging from rolls, cartwheels and back handsprings to full twisting back layouts.
