2016 Lifeguard Training Course

BSAC offers the American Red Cross Lifeguard certification Blended Learning Class. Blended Learning means that the students will utilize the American Red Cross learning center to help facilitate the Lifeguard course. Students will attend the pre-req swim test* (see below). Students who want to become a lifeguard should know how to swim. The lifeguard course is designed to teach proficient swimmers life-saving skills and is not a learn to swim program. If you are a candidate that does not know how to swim, taking a series of progressive, developmental swim lessons is recommended. After the swim test, students will receive via email the internet web link to the online portion of the class. Students will have exactly one week in which to complete the online portion of the class prior to the hands-on classroom portion begin administered.

The cost of the course is $199 which includes all instruction, American Red Cross fees, facility fees, Red Cross equipment fees and certificate of completion when all requirements have been successfully passed. Students will need to purchase a resuscitation mask during the course which will be needed for the CPR portion. For convenience, this may be purchased at the Membership Services Desk at BSAC, or students may wish to purchase at an alternate location.

Students must be a minimum of 15 years of age by the end of the course, attend EVERY CLASS, and pass the FINAL EXAM to be certified. There are no make up classes offered. All students should plan on PROMPT attendance and be prepared to take diligent notes throughout the course.

*The preprequisite swim test will be held at BSAC on the Saturday of the preceding week of the course at 11:00AM. Students are required to swim 300 yards for lifeguarding by using the Freestyle (crawl stroke) and Breaststroke methods. For students to be certified in Water Front or Water Park lifeguarding, the swim test consists of successfully completing 500 yards. All payments must be made in full PRIOR to taking the swim test. Classes will not be held unless a minimum of three participants are enrolled. There is an additional fee for Water Park and Water Front Lifeguarding classes.

Registration may be made for the class in person at the Brandon Sports and Aquatic Center's Membership Services department or via phone at (813) 689-0908.

Lifeguard Training & Water Safety

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguards protect the well-being of swimmers having a good time at the pool, ocean or waterpark.  Lifeguards protect the swimming public by keeping an eye on water activities in and around the pool.  They rescue  those in distress, know  first aid, and can administer artificial respiration if needed.  They must be in excellent physical condition, with good strength and endurance and must be expert swimmers.  BSAC is a leader in the community in Lifeguard certification/recertification.  We are also an approved authorized provider from the American Red Cross.  Your lifeguard certification will last 2 years.  You must be 15 years old by the last class date  to take the class.

Please note: you must be proficient in both the freestyle and breaststroke and be able to complete 150 consecutive  yards of each prior to the required swim test at the beginning of this course. Enrollees who cannot pass the swim test have the option of transferring to a class at a later date while they work on their swimming skills, but no refunds will be given. Bsac does not provide swim instruction to potential enrollees. In addition, payment must be made prior to the start of each session.
