Using toothpicks and marshmallows, students were challenged to make tall 3-dimensional towers. Each group had to work together to create a strong base that would be able to hold the weight of a tall tower.
The Afterschool All-Star community club took a visit to Rosecastle Assisted Living facility on Valentine's Day. Students made cards for the people at Rosecastle, and got many hugs and thanks for their time there. What a day to spread love in our community!
Diane Laura, DEVELOP Program Manager at NASA Langley Research Center, volunteered her time to speak to the robotics club about her job at the NASA Langley Research Center. She gave the club examples of jobs and situations that required robotic/engineering/programming skills to accomplish. The kids got a chance to ask her questions and learn more about her role at NASA.
BSAC’s Mermaid Camp had a successful debut in December, offering an unforgettable experience for young swimmers between the ages of 5-12. For the very first time, pink and blue tails filled our heated, Ken Hagan Community Learn to Swim Pool. Lifeguard and resident mermaid, Mariah Diaz, led the 5 day course which covered everything from underwater flips to proper swimming technique. Theresa Hickie, Senior Director of Sports Programming, wanted to bring the magic of mermaids to the Brandon area. “I wanted to offer a new experience for children that have always dreamed of swimming like Ariel from The Little Mermaid,” said Theresa. “It’s also a great core workout and could potentially become a fitness class in the future.” BSAC offered the Mermaid Camp for free, giving any child the opportunity to participate on a first come, first served registration basis. The camp filled up quickly despite the chilly December weather. Parents enjoyed watching their children from the bleachers and snapped plenty of pictures to capture the experience. “I chose to lead this mermaid class because I knew it would be an unforgettable time for the kids,” stated Mariah. “They really enjoyed learning new movements in the water.” Young girls were filled with excitement and glitter as they graduated from the course, which ended with a photoshoot and mermaid show for family and friends. It’s not every day children can escape reality and live out their fantasy dreams! Be on the lookout for more Mermaid Camp experiences in the future at BSAC. Dear Friends of BSAC, BSAC would like to thank you for your interest in our upcoming fundraiser, The Trident Treasure Gala, which will take place Saturday, February 15, 2020, at The Regent in Riverview. We anticipate an outstanding evening with more than 425 guests in attendance. The Trident Treasure Gala will be our signature event of the year. Guests and sponsors will enjoy a sit-down dinner and open bar, all while dressed in their favorite pirate attire! Guests will also be able to bid on unique items in our silent and live auctions. All money raised will provide scholarships for programs that are very near and dear to our hearts! One of our favorite scholarships to give at BSAC is for our TRIDENT program. Special needs adults are given the opportunity to learn invaluable life skills and receive hands-on job training. We are unique in helping this special needs community because there are not a lot of programs that offer services to adults who have aged out of school. Our TRIDENT participants become more independent, contributing members to society. They also have a lot of fun learning, exercising and growing with their peers when they spend time with us in this program. BSAC also offers free swimming lessons to at-risk children in an effort to fulfill our mission of youth drowning prevention. Children in Florida are especially at risk for drowning due to the high number of bodies of water in our state. Qualifying families are also eligible for scholarships to the BSAC After-School Experience (BASE). Students have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular clubs at no extra cost, including robotics, arts & crafts, sports, culinary, community service, and more. BASE is located at our main location in addition to five Hillsborough County school sites, two of which are Title 1. Without the generous support of our sponsors, donors, and volunteers, we would not be able to provide the high-quality care our families depend on us for every day. Please consider becoming an event sponsor or donating a silent auction item. We anticipate this being our biggest year yet and look forward to working with you and your business.
