BSAC would like to congratulate Alex Zimmer and Janet Neely for being chosen as the Team Leaders of August! Both women deeply care about their respective roles and make a huge impact in the Brandon community. To receive this award, team leaders must be nominated by their colleagues for a strong work ethic, positive attitude and impact in our organization.
Alex Zimmer has always loved working with children. Her cheerful personality and kindhearted spirit make her an excellent fit as a BSAC mentor. Her role has developed after moving up to the fourth and fifth grade students. Alex stays focused on helping her students with their homework before moving on to drive the competitive spirit with games and activities. She is always there to talk, especially with young girls who need someone they can trust and turn to.
“I love being a stability factor with these kids,” said Alex. “It’s preventative to where it keeps them not necessarily out of trouble but on the right path. We can be a role model for these kids and push them in the right direction because we spend so much time with them.”
Alex plans to use her experience at BSAC to later pursue a career in pediatric psychiatry for kids that need court mandated counseling.
“Working here has taught me that there is a way to open up every child,” said Alex. “It takes a while to get their trust, but once you do they will tell you everything. You can figure out why they are acting a certain way and try strategies to fix problem behaviors. Every kid is different, it’s fun to get creative with it.”
Outside of BSAC, Alex enjoys hanging out with her friends, going to the gym, and traveling. She also played soccer for 16 years and tries to incorporate play time whenever she can both at BSAC and at home.
Janet Neely has been involved at BSAC since her daughter Sarah started swimming here in third grade. She went from team mom to volunteer, organizing banquets and swim meets. Sarah is now a lifeguard at BSAC and Janet decided to transition from stay at home mom and volunteer to Aquatic Administrative Manager.
Janet had a very successful year running the Mobile Swim program through the Children’s Board of Hillsborough County. BSAC was able to surpass it’s goal of 260 free lessons, impacting 289 lives! Her strong initiative and positive attitude will continue to make this program a success as we try to reach our goal of impacting 420 children through Mobile Swim lessons next year.
“I worked hard on Mobile Swim this year,” said Janet. “All the challenges are worth it because it’s so rewarding to see what a child has learned in just one week of lessons. Parents are so appreciative when their child can swim without floaties all because of what we have done. It’s amazing.”
When Janet is not organizing Mobile Swim in our community, she is picking up our After-School All-Stars from Cimino Elementary School. Her position at BSAC often comes with new tasks and challenges, but she is always ready to put her best foot forward. In her spare time, Janet enjoys watching her two grandchildren, working out, and playing with her pets.
On behalf of everyone at BSAC, we would like to congratulate both Alex and Janet for their great spirits and a job well done.
