A dynamic aquatic program made a splash this week as BSAC introduced Blue Wave Water Polo. It’s one of the only team sports in water; comparable to soccer but you get to use your hands! The Blue Wave Water Polo team captures the speed and endurance of swimming with the skill and strategy of team play. This program is the first of its kind in the Greater Brandon area and is sure to be a hit with all ability and experience levels.
Head Coach Zach Miller, who has experience as both a player and coach, feels that starting a program from scratch has a lot of advantages for those joining now. The advantage, he feels, is that anyone and everyone can learn to play – you just need to know how to swim.
“It might seem intimidating to try a new sport completely, but everyone is brand new and we are learning this as a cohesive team,” said Miller. “I am excited to share the sport I love so much with others.”
The water polo program is designed for young men and women of all ages and skill levels. BSAC’s goal is to have water polo players come together as a community while expanding the sport in Tampa Bay. Practices are held in our new Ken Hagan Community Learn to Swim pool as well as in the deeper diving well in BSAC’s 50-meter competition pool. This allows team members to build endurance in the water over a period of time while feeling comfortable learning a new sport.
Coach Miller found his love for water polo during high school when he was looking for a way to stay active in a team setting. He later went on to play at Michigan State after it caught traction in that area. He moved to Florida only seven months ago after making the passionate decision to pursue coaching and share knowledge of the sport.
“I met lifelong best friends through water polo; it’s a very close sport that is team-driven,” said Miller. “If you enjoy being in the water, then this is the sport for you.”
Practices are being held every Saturday and Sunday from 11am-1pm, with additional weekday practice options coming in the near future.
